Client Centered Defense for Mecklenburg County

The Mecklenburg County Public Defender's Office represents people charged with criminal offenses who cannot afford to hire a private attorney.  Attorneys in the Mecklenburg Defender's Office handle misdemeanor and felony trials and represent defendants on motions for appropriate relief. We also represent individuals who are facing involuntary commitment for mental illness, alcohol problems or drug abuse.

The Mecklenburg County Public Defender's Office is the largest in the state. Kevin P. Tully was sworn in as Public Defender on July 1, 2007. Tully has worked in various positions with the Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office since 1989.

Tully steered the office in a more holistic direction, adding social workers and a full time Spanish language interpreter to assist the attorneys in addressing client needs, and forging a connection with the Bronx Defenders in New York City to receive training and assistance in providing holistic representation to clients.
